Meta Information is Vital to Proper SEO
Regardless of what type of platform you’re using, WordPress, blogger, or any other type of blog platform, your metadata is really the lifeblood of your rankings. If you’re not filling in the right information, Google cannot find you and people cannot find you.
The metadata information is the title, description, keywords, and any alt tags that might be associated with the page or the post.
The title is the title that’s going to appear in search engine results pages so it has to be exactly what the article is about. This is not the time for catchy phrases unless you’re blogging to a specific niche on a platform that is constantly monitored by your readers.
The description is the second most vital spot since it gives you about 160 characters to talk about what the blog or the article is about. It’s always a good idea to add a call to action or phone number because so many people use Google as a phone book. If people have to click through to your website just to find your phone number you may not be getting the leads that you want.
Your keywords should be your title and part of your description. Google, Bing, and Yahoo pulls these keywords and they should be somewhere within the text. Although the meta-keywords are not as important anymore as the title and description, it’s not about idea to include them and they should be similar to your title and your description.
The alt tag should be in every single picture. Every single image or video should have an alt tag attached to it. Google and other search engines cannot see pictures or video, see you have to let them know exactly what it is they’re looking at. By putting your keywords and your topics with in that alt tag, you are further confirming what the post is about.
If you leave these spots blank, Google will just pull the title from the post itself and the first few lines of the post or article for the description. This may not be enough for you to be found properly. Take the extra few minutes, perfect the metadata, and be found.
